Texture Compression Requirements

The following requirements are general for all TC methods:

  • Compression ratio should be high ( >4x) to provide necessary transfer rate 
  • The decompression of Texture maps has to be done very fast (real time) 
  • Direct, random access to individual pixels should be supported  (texture lookup)
  • No visible image degradation should be provided 


After description of several existing methods for texture compression we will make their analysis under these requirements.
